2004 colloquium on the environment

Kennedy Keynote Speaker at Colloquium

Photo of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.On Wednesday April 21,2003 Penn State will host "A Colloquium on Environmental Initiatives at Penn State” with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. scheduled as the keynote speaker. Kennedy will speak at 5 pm in the HUB-Robeson Center Auditorium on the theme of “Our Environmental Destiny.”

The Colloquium will feature a series of in-depth presentations about Penn State environmental initiatives from both operational and academic units and provide an opportunity for those who are interested in the environment to meet, learn and share ideas.  Sessions include: highlights on how the University has become a national leader in greening its campuses; discussion of Penn State's Environmental Stewardship strategy, what the challenges are, and how you can help by acting locally to promote sustainable behavior; and sessions by the Penn State Institutes of the Environment on how it is creating new opportunities for faculty members and students to pursue environmental research, education, and outreach.

Kennedy’s keynote speech will conclude the colloquium. Kennedy’s reputation as a resolute defender of the environment stems from a litany of successful legal actions: prosecuting governments and companies for polluting the Hudson River and Long Island Sound; winning settlements for the Hudson Riverkeeper; arguing cases to expand citizen access to the shoreline; and suing sewage treatment plants to force compliance with the Clean Water Act. He serves as chief prosecuting attorney for the Hudson Riverkeeper, senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, all while serving as the president of the Waterkeeper Alliance. He is also a professor and supervising attorney at the environmental litigation clinic at Pace University School of Law in New York.

Sessions will run from 1:30 to 4:45 pm. Kennedy will speak at 5:00 pm with a short question and answer session immediately following his presentation. The Penn State Institutes of the Environment (PSIE) and the Finance and Business Environmental Stewardship Strategy programare sponsoring the event.
